And the £43.8million signing revealed he asked himself if he had made the right choice in moving from Inter Milan to “Rainchester”.

Onana declared: “It was really hard to start off with — it was the first time I faced such a situation.

“In the beginning I thought, ‘Wow, did I make the right choice?’.

“Now I know the league, the people, the country, Manchester — OK, Rainchester! When I look back now, I’m just smiling because it was a big lesson for me.

“But I’m 100 per cent sure I made the right choice because Manchester United is the bigger club in this country, one of the biggest in the world.

“Who would say ‘No’ to playing for this beautiful club?”

However, Onana concedes all the United players are “not happy” with the way this season has unfolded.

Boss Erik ten Hag’s side are languishing eighth in the Premier League after losing a record 12 matches, with the Dutchman’s job on the line.

United are also in danger of missing out on Europe for the first time in 10 years if they finish outside the top seven and fail to win the FA Cup in this month’s Wembley final against rivals Manchester City.

The players have also been under fire from former Old Trafford legends Roy Keane, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville.

Ahead of tonight’s crunch trip to Crystal Palace, Onana, 28, told MUTV: “The whole season has been difficult for all of us.

“But we all have to take responsibility. I start with myself, always.

“You can speak about a lot of things —  injuries, bad luck. But we are Manchester United,  such a big club, so we cannot talk about that. We have to stay positive.

“My team-mates are not happy with the situation because they are all winners, everyone wants to win.

“When we started the season, we spoke in the dressing room about fighting for every title.

“But things happen in life and we have to deal with this situation.

“We have a beautiful final to play and another few games. We’ll go for it and end with dignity.”

Pundits verdict on Ten Hag's future

Where do the pundits stand on Erik ten Hag's Manchester United future

Jamie Carragher – Sacked

“I don’t see how Erik ten Hag stays. It’s just performance after performance.”

Gary Neville – Stay if he wins the FA Cup

“To sack a manager who’s won two trophies in his first two seasons at the club I think would be extreme.”

Louis Saha – On the fence

“I don’t see it as clearly but they need changes from the players but they need changes from him as well.”

Alan Shearer – Sacked

“I believe the future of the Man Utd manager is already determined. Even if they win the FA Cup I think he’s gone.”
